Making your own fruit rollups is as easy as mixing fruit! There are a few simple tricks that will make your fruit rollups thick, peelable, and delicious if you follow them!
My kids love, love, love fruit snacks, fruit rollups … anything that is fruity and sweet. You would sit down and eat 5 packs of fruit snacks, no problem! I just don’t feel good when they eat all the sugar! I feel good when they eat fruit in a different shape! My 5 year old has texture problems, especially with fruit, which makes it difficult for her to eat a piece of fruit at times. But she will eat all mixed fruits.
How to do fruit rollups without a dehydrator
STEP 1: The first step is to mix your fruits. You need about 5 cups of fruit for one pan. It can be any kind of fruit! We have tried many different varieties and they are all delicious. Mix until very smooth.
STEP 2: This next step is only needed if your kids are having texture issues and your fruits have small seeds (strawberries, raspberries, etc.). Pour your mixture into a fine mesh strainer and stir until everything is through.
STEP 3: This next step is the most important! Pour your fruit mixture onto a baking sheet. You will achieve the best success with a silpat or a silicone mat. You can also try using waxed paper, freezer paper, or parchment paper, but none of these offer the same quality as using a silicone mat.
The key distributes it very thickly and evenly. The edges are always processed the fastest and can become thin and brittle. Spread the mixture thickly over the edges. The more even you can get your mix, the better it will be. I leave mine at least 1/4 inch thick in all places.
STEP 4: Once it’s smooth and thick all round, place it in your preheated oven at 200 degrees F. It bakes for 4-6 hours, depending on how thick you spread it and how hot your oven is cooking.
Once it’s dried and not thick and sticky in the middle, it’s done. This usually takes between 4 and 6 hours, depending on how thick your puree is. You can then peel it and cut it into strips.
We rolled ours in freezer paper and tied a cute ribbon around it. This is a great treat to send lunch to your kids, let them eat after school, or even during activities and sports!
