Study of the dangers of fluoride
Fluoride is one of those health issues that many people feel a little confused about. In fact, it has been added to many areas of the water supply to promote better dental health. Certainly, people in the alternative health community have questioned the so-called benefits and have claimed the safety of fluoride for years. The study, conducted at York University in Toronto, Canada, found that pregnant women exposed to fluoride may have lower IQs. These results are based on a study that included more than 500 women with babies in six cities in Canada. About half of the subjects lived in places like Toronto, where drinking water is fluorinated, and the other half lived in places like Vancouver, where fluoride is not added to the water supply.
There were two ways to analyze fluoride uptake. The researchers collected urine samples from participants during pregnancy and tested fluoride levels. They also asked the volunteers about their water consumption and determined their fluoride intake based on the amount of fluoride added to the city's water supply. Interestingly, both girls and boys had slightly lower IQs when their mother's fluoride intake and water fluoride concentration were higher, but only boys were similarly affected when urine sample fluoride levels were increased.
Possible effects of fluoride on intelligence
Despite the fact that the IQ difference between children exposed to fluoride and those who were not was only a few points, the results are very worrying. After all, the numbers are average and some children are more likely to be affected than others.
As mentioned earlier, fluoride has been linked to neurological problems, which are conditions that affect the brain and central nervous system. Hence, it is not a big leap forward to conclude that fluoride can contribute to damage in the brain that would have an even greater impact on a fetus' developing brain. In addition, current research is not the first to find evidence of problems related to fluoride use in pregnancy. A 2017 study at the University of Toronto in Canada also showed that children who were exposed to fluoride before birth had lower scores on cognitive function tests than their peers who were not exposed to fluoride.
Avoiding fluoride and its potential health problems
Since fluoride does not offer any benefit during pregnancy, it seems like a no-brainer that women should strive to limit their fluoride exposure after conception. But the rest of us may also want to limit our intake to avoid the many other complications associated with fluoride. If your water doesn't have added fluoride then you're pretty safe and you may just have to switch your brand of toothpaste to one that is fluoride-free. Do some research before purchasing because not all water filters remove fluoride. Systems using reverse osmosis, distillation, activated alumina, or deionization are generally very effective.
