Onions can significantly increase testosterone levels

Eating onions to increase testosterone levels may seem like a joke, but a study conducted on rodents by Iranian scientists showed that onions can increase testosterone levels in rodents by up to 300 percent.

According to a study by the Iranian University of Tabriz, onion juice can increase testosterone levels just as much as substances like Nolvadex or Clomid.

Onion (Latin: Allium cepa) has a positive effect on the treatment of various diseases worldwide and has been used as a medicine and also as a source of food since ancient times. Recent studies have also shown that onions are a high source of antioxidants, and antioxidants can increase the production of testosterone and sperm in the genitals.

The Testosterone Boosting Onion Study

The study was carried out on three groups of rodents over a period of twenty days.

The first group (control group of 10 subjects) received normal food, the second group (10 subjects) received 0.5 g / kg of fresh onion juice per day and the third group (also 10 subjects) received 1.0 g / kg of onion juice per day .

On the twentieth day, sperm samples were taken and testosterone levels were measured. It was found that total serum testosterone levels increased significantly in all test groups, and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels only increased significantly in the group that received the high fresh dose onion juice, but the level of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) did not differ between the experimental group and the control group. The motility and viability of the sperm were also significantly increased in both test groups.

How do onions increase testosterone?

What is the mechanism behind this success? Antioxidants are believed to neutralize free radicals in the testicles. This information is a result of the decrease in malondialdehyde concentrations that occur when subjects were given large doses of onion juice.

The researchers suspect that the antioxidants in question are likely to be selenium compounds found in onions and phenols like quercetin and isorhamnetin. Isorhamnetine is also made in the body when enzymes convert quercetin with the help of S-adenosylmethionine.
